For the first time, you can buy Ducky tickets online AND pay annual dues online! What a wonderful and convenient new ability, and all done by OUR volunteers.

We’ve also expanded the Ducky Derby Duck Race at Peaksview Park to include a morning “fun run” for kids and an evening soiree built around the Kentucky Derby at Old Elkton Farm in Forest. May 1st will be an outstanding day, so be sure to join in the fun of AT LEAST 1 activity. AND we’re working on 3 new grant requests so we can keep spreading the Smart Moves message – one featuring a new “bouldering” area near the Sprayground. Not sure what bouldering is? Stay tuned – it’s really neat!

Lastly, we have our largest group of provisionals in at least the last 5 years and it is an exceptional group of women. I’ve been fortunate to spend some one-on-one time with several of you and am just so excited about the many abilities and ideas you bring to our League.

Quite an incredible group of gals, don’t you agree?

At our house, it was Weston’s first Christmas and it was spectacular! I was very pleased he actually appreciated the presents – he was pretty fixed on the wrapping paper and ribbons at first :) Top presents thus far are all of a musical nature. My husband aspires for him to be a drummer… I’ll be breaking out the “doctor kit” and “play dress up in a suit” soon – just kidding! (well, mostly…)

Bring out the sweaters and jeans for the time when I believe the Hill City is the most beautiful. Fall also has an air of “getting down to business” – lazy summer days are behind us and we’ll be getting some exciting work done over the next few months for the JLL. Fall is a time of many adjustments and change, too. I think this story from one of my favorite kindergartners sums it up:

Toby had been so excited for his very first day of school. There were, of course, tears from mom at the busstop, but this young man bravely got on the bus and off to his big first day. It was all mom could do to not pick him up at school midday, but she patiently waited for Toby to come home and share the day’s adventures. Toby finally got off the bus and walked home, collapsing immediately on a cushy sofa. “There are no naps in kindergarten, mama – school is hard work.”

The JLL is ready to get down to work, too. We are preparing to launch our annual campaign as we solicit sponsors for the important community programs we support, including Day in the Park, Smart Moves, and our community grants – just to name a few initiatives that make difference in the lives of the people we serve! The 5-member committee of Day in the Park somehow manages to pull together an awesome, family friendly event with over 10,000 people each September. Throw in a little sunshine and the day is magical! What an incredible feat, reaching such a diverse audience and providing so much free fun. Thank you, Margaret Lyle Jones and committee for another great year.

The fact that you are viewing this blog is another example… The website has always been a challenge for us. The technology requires such a regular commitment to maintenance, the task can be overwhelming. But Beth Burns and Aimee Mills are helping us change to new software and set-up options that will greatly streamline our work and allow it to truly become OUR website – skills we can all take with us for the years to come. Check back often – we’ll be making lots of exciting changes!
